After a working time-out last month (apart from implementing the new Links pages), we’re back with lots of words. Two large articles cover the now little-known band the Shirts, one of the notable seventies CBGB’s bands who, with better luck, might have joined the ranks of Television, Blondie, the Ramones and the Talking Heads. Everyone was interrelated then, linked by the club they all played and hung out in. The Shirts were even managed by club owner Hilly Kristal (an artist in his own right, with his own records on the juke box). The articles, about the background to the making of their first album and their second, Streetlight Shine, are illustrated with many contemporary photographs of the club and the band.

The Shirts, in their original lineup augmented with three further singers and players, will be playing CBGB’s in New York in late June.

None of the Shirts’ albums are available on CD. So we've provided streaming versions on the production commentary pages of nine of the 22 album tracks so you can hear what the fuss was about. (For copyright reasons we can’t offer mp3 downloads.) Regrettably, we now can offer streaming only in RealAudio. To keep both Real and Liquid available for all sound files became prohibitively expensive. We continue to offer our own music for paid Liquid Audio download as well as on CD (and a few freebies also in Liquid and mp3 formats).

BETTY Rules final performancegroupBETTY Rules had its closing performance on Sunday March 30. After 212 performances, it will pause before going on tour at the end of this year or early next. In the next month we will post a set of photos from the last Zipper Theater show.

Carol Lipnik is playing a rare gig with her Spookarama ensemble at the Knitting Factory in New York Tuesday April 8.

It’s taken us a little time to get decent this month. As some of you may have noticed, our E mail pages were blown up March 11 (by the server company quietly changing an application on us). If any of you E mailed us since then from the site, please resend (warning messages went up March 20). The pages went back a few years and were looking a bit like the dog’s breakfast. So we took the opportunity to rewrite them all, and expand the range of artists included. So please write to us, a note to an artist, a review, or inspiration for how we might do things better. And if you aren't a member of the Stereo Society, please join up at our Contact page to receive the free monthly newsletter.
