In a patient’s room at the center of the facility of Père Deux, ‘traditional healer’, near the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer, in the Artibonite river valley at Deschapelles, Haiti.

The madonna is Erzulie. Uncertain whether she is Erzulie Freda or Erzulie (something else): one Erzulie is good and the other can do evil. She remains, basically, the godess of love. The mermaid is La Sirène – goddess of the water. This is a typical altar in a Voodo (spelling varies) enclave like Père Deux’s (?Père Dieu’s?). He may be gone now, prematurely like most of Haiti.
