We took this on a piece of waste ground behind Angel tube station [Islington, north London]. It was mid-evening, under security floodlights. Although I hate performers who wear sun glasses, using them in this portrait made me look alien. I wouldnt wear them normally. No matter how wrecked you might look, you have to appear more interesting without the glasses. I think the same about people closing eyes when singing for extended periods: rude and unfriendly.
The outfit is an actual piece of old clothing – a cheap way of getting a unique item. I really like 40s shapes: strong geometric. The 80s copies of shoulder pads didnt look quite right when you compared them with the 40s.
