Across the Bowery from Bleecker Street to CBGBs
Late at night in 1978.
Note the Palace Hotel doorway to the left.
One summer night in 1979, fire trucks turned up urgently and closed and evacuated the club. A fire upstairs.
The audience at 3am left, the group and essential hangers-on clustered round the pool table. The sound board and stage set up had been covered with plastic wrap. Beers all round, please.
A few burning mattresses were thrown out of the third floor window, then the fire crew, satisfied that the show was over, went back to base.
The plumbing supply store to the right later became the CBGB’s Gallery.
