We're laying back a little for the summer. The site will be updated occasionally, but not monthly just yet. Don't fret, we're not disappearing. Every time we add something new, you'll see a linked guide to it here, with our archive of past Newsletters. If you join the Stereo Society, you will receive a monthly newsletter with direct links to everything new and announcements about fresh downloads etc.
The Stereo Society changes gear this month (this written in May). We’re slowing down the pace of our music-making and thinking about new projects. In particular, we’re relaxing the release deadline for Dancing At The Stereo Society, which will include radical new mixes of several songs familiar around here, such as Ships That Pass In The Night and Pretty Vacant from Thorne’s Sprawl CD. There will also be a radically reworked version of Lene Lovich’s Lucky Number, from the original master and with fresh contributions from the great lady herself. We’re also shifting the way we get CDs to you. Order fulfillment is now through the long-established indie distributor CD Baby. The price of our CDs goes up slightly, to $9 all round, but with a 30% discount if you buy more than one copy of a particular album. With this new arrangement, orders are dispatched reliably and immediately, more efficiently than wrapping them up in our dusty basement in New York. All titles will be available, but there will be a short period while our two newest releases are being set up on their site. Lene Lovich will appear with the three-women group MAB at 4pm on Saturday May 12, nicely at tea time. Electrowerkz, 7 Torrens Street, London EC1 (close to the Angel tube station). Phone: 0871-311 0831. Johnny Reinhard’s annual concert series continues May 2, with a presentation of several new works featuring wind instruments. Elodie Lauten launches Ecocity for wind quartet and percussionists. Composer Johnny Reinhard introduces a polymicrotonal concerto, Imprimatur for solo bass trombone, wind quartet and percussion, featuring bass trombonist Dave Taylor. Joseph Pehrson offers BlackJinn for wind quartet, tuned to a 21-note subset of 72-tone equal temperament. Composer Kyle Gann celebrates The Day (Revisited) for flute, clarinet, keyboards, and electric bass guitar. Tuesday, May 8, 2007 is a focus on the great American microtonal pioneer Harry Partch as embodied by his Seventeen Lyrics of Li Po. Johnny Reinhard intones microtonally to Partch's system in partnership with violist Anastasia Solberg. Internationally acclaimed bass trombone soloist Dave Taylor makes his third appearance to premiere another new composition by Johnny Reinhard. In the composer’s words: ‘Semantics of Tone is for bass trombone with text. The text has quotes from publications that use different meanings for the word "tone" and the music follows these specific meanings’. Both concerts begin at 10pm at the Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery just south of Bleecker Street, New York. $10, a bargain by our reckoning for fresh new music and attitude.
