The big, beautiful BETTY news this April is that their unique musical BETTY Rules, which ran for a full six months until spring 2003 in New York City, is booked for a six-week run in Chicago at the Lakeshore Theatre, May 6 through June 20, 2004. Additionally, they release their Original Cast Recording on their own label, which you can purchase at their site or through Amazon. There are glimmerings of further recordings in conjunction with the Stereo Society, but no details as yet.
It had to happen eventually. This month, Thorne extends his record production memoirs with two further Soft Cell essays. Non Stop Erotic Cabaret was the group’s first album, incorporating their enormous first hit Tainted Love, and breaking new ground in the exciting, creative period that was the early eighties. The album pushed out the boundaries of pop synthesizer music at the time, even incorporating a clarinet with the simple, early rhythm machine sounds. Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing was a club-oriented collection of new versions of previous tracks as well as a new UK single and in 1982 was one of the very first dance track collections to be released.
The runaway success story of Tainted Love is also updated and expanded, with further Soft Cell and Marc Almond essays to follow. Thorne’s collection of essays now covers 34 individual projects from 1974 to 2003. That's a lot of words and music. Go ramble, please.
The Shirts are continuing to build their renaissance, and will record tracks at CBGB’s in New York during April to form the basis of a forthcoming CD. Although several old favorites are to be included, the bulk of them are new compositions.
Meanwhile, thank you yet again for visiting and contributing to yet another record month. 45,450 visitor sessions were recorded on our server in March, another all-time record, with hits once again way past the half million mark. Since it’s the fifth birthday of the Stereo Society this month, we celebrate partly by posting the chart of visitors since our launch on April 15 1999.
